Clarence Cannon rivals Monroe City and Palmyra have been battling on the gridiron for many years, but you have to go all the way back to 1997 to witness a true elimination game between the two schools. The 22 year drought ends Friday as 7-3 Monroe City welcomes 7-3 Palmyra in the Class 2 District 6 semifinals.

Monroe City won the Mayor’s Cup match two weeks ago 40-22 to secure the second seed in district, and home-field advantage for this game. Palmyra coach Kevin Miles says they’re are excited to get another crack at Monroe City.

Monroe City senior running back Antwaun Battle rushed two touchdowns and caught one in the contest two weeks ago. Head coach David Kirby says that Week 9 matchup was their best physical effort all year.

Monroe City is coming off a district opening 44-36 victory over Clopton/Elsberry last Friday. Kirby says the Panthers can’t get complacent knowing they just beat Palmyra.

Palmyra defeated Highland 44-12 last week. Senior running back Dakota Compton played a critical role in the Week 9 gameplan. He rushed for 142 yards on 26 carries and had a rushing touchdown. Miles reveals what the Panthers need to improve on.

Monroe City has won the last four matchups against Palmyra. Back in that 1997 contest, it was the in the Class 2 quarterfinals. Monroe City won 34-28 enroute to a state runner-up finish.
