Moberly Sweeps Kirksville With Impressive Team Efforts

The Moberly teams played perhaps their most complete games of the year in a sweep at Kirksville Monday. Both Moberly squads entered the doubleheader 0-2 against Kirksville this season.

The Moberly boys outlasted Kirksville 79-77. The Spartans outscored the Tigers 22-5 from the last minute of the third quarter through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter.

Jaisten Payne delivered a season-high 33 for the 8-12 Spartans. The junior sealed the game with two free throws with four seconds left. Junior Martez Nabors offered a career-high nine, and sophomore Derieus Wallace ended one off a career high with 15. Kirksville head coach Tyler Martin explained what changed in the second half.

Sophomore Keaton Anderson paced the 13-5 Tigers with 23. Moberly limited Kirksville standout Noah Copeland to 13.

The Moberly girls topped Kirksville 55-40. After Moberly answered Kirksville’s opening bucket, the 9-12 Lady Spartans never trailed. Moberly head coach Tony Vestal reacted to the dominant effort.

Four Lady Spartans landed in double-figures. Grace Billington finished with a game-high 16. The Lady Spartans led 39-31 through three quarters, then opened the fourth on a 6-0 run. Vestal elaborated on Moberly’s recent improvement.

Devan Corbett tallied 11 points for 10-10 Kirksville. Both Moberly teams visit Fulton Tuesday while both Kirksville squads meet Marshall.
