Moberly Soccer Hosts Fulton in Key NCMC Matchup

The Moberly boys soccer team will look to put past seasons’ defeats to rest when they host the Fulton Hornets Tuesday night at Dr. Larry K. Noel Spartan Stadium. Last season, Fulton erased a 2-0 deficit in the district championship game to win 3-2 against Moberly. This year, the Spartans are out to bury their opponents in an avalanche of goals. Moberly has netted 47 goals in nine games on their way to a 6-3 start. Moberly coach Ben Hays says the team’s goalscoring ability has certainly been a strength.

While Moberly has racked up the goals, so too has Fulton. The Hornets have scored 40 goals over the course of an 8-3 start to the season. Alban Dervishi is their leading scorer with twelve. Hays discusses what his backline will need to do to ward off Fultons’ attackers.

Moberly will be the fresher of their two teams having last played in their own tournament back on September 18th. Meanwhile, Fulton is coming off a scrappy 4-3 win Saturday afternoon at Warrenton. Fulton coach Joel Henley says the team is looking forward to the week ahead.

Like Moberly, Fulton features a strong senior class and several returners from last year’s district title-winning team. That includes Dervishi, who netted the winning goal with just over two minutes remaining to help the Hornets claim the championship. Henley discusses the emerging soccer rivalry between Fulton and Moberly.

Tuesday’s matchup will also have implications on the conference title race in the NCMC. Both teams are 2-2 in conference play thus far, but are each in reach of Marshall and Hannibal for the top two spots. Pregame coverage will begin at 4:45 pm on KWIX 1230 AM, 92.5 FM, and centralmoinfo.com. Colin Schowe will have the play-by-play.
