Cargo ships containing soybeans from New Orleans could soon become heavier. That’s as a result of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the State of Louisiana signing an agreement to fund a project to deepen the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge to the Gulf of Mexico. This project has long been a priority for the Soy Transportation Coalition and its executive director, Mike Steenhoek.

The first phase of the project is set to begin this fall, and farmers could see an impact before the second phase even begins.

Soy Transportation Coalition executive director Mike Steenhoek notes the two-million dollar contribution made by soybean farmers and the United Soybean Board to help make the project possible.
