Milan and Putnam County Renew Rivalry in Grand River Conference Opener

The Milan Wildcats and Putnam County Midgets will renew their rivalry Friday night at Cal Hubbard Field in Milan. The Wildcats earned their first win of the season last week with a 43-8 victory over St Mary’s Academy, Kansas. Coach Mark Cole expects a stout test from the Putnam County defense.

Offensively the Wildcats racked up 353 yards rushing and five touchdowns in last week’s win. The Wildcat defense got three interceptions and held the St. Mary’s Academy offense off the scoreboard. Cole says they’ll have a challenge this week in Putnam County quarterback Trace Riediger.

Riediger has 118 rushing yards and two touchdowns this season while going 5-13 passing for 92 yards. The Midgets are coming off a 42-0 loss to Father Tolton last week to fall to 0-2. Putnam County head coach Adam Huse says he’s liked his team’s response.

Putnam County won both meetings with the Wildcats last season, including a 26-0 victory in the district semifinals. Huse says his defense will need to be fundamentally sound to continue that winning streak.

Pregame coverage from Milan begins at 6:40 on Superstation KRES and centralmoinfo.com. Colin Schowe will have the call.
