Milan Aims for District Title Against Penney

The Milan Wildcats will go for their first district title since 2011 when they host the Penney Hornets Friday night at Cal Hubbard Field. The Wildcats reached this point courtesy of a gritty 26-21 win last week against Marceline. Coach Mark Cole discusses the team’s focus in practice this week.

Carlos Cotto ran for 222 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s victory. Both he and Ahmet Niasse have rushed for over 1,000 yards this season for Milan. While running the ball is a strength for the Wildcats, Cole says the key in this game will be the play of his defensive line.

Penney comes into the contest with a record of 7-4. Three of those losses have come to teams that are either in a district championship or a state quarterfinal this weekend. Carter Kanoy (Ka-noy) leads the Hornets with 922 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns. Clay Finch and Tate Youtsey have also seen over 100 carries out of the backfield. Coach Alex Lloyd likes the depth of his team.

Lloyd is seeking his second district title in three years as head coach of the Hornets. Penney broke a 14-14 halftime tie to defeat Westran 40-22 last week. Lloyd expects a physical battle with Milan.

The last meeting between Milan and Penney came in the 2018 district semifinals with the Hornets winning 20-13 in double overtime. Pregame coverage of this year’s contest will begin at 6:40 on Superstation KRES and Colin Schowe will have the play-by-play.
