Mexico Sweeps Moberly in Regular Season NCMC Games

The Mexico Bulldogs completed the regular season sweep over the Spartans in a NCMC doubleheader Friday night in Moberly.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the game with an 8-0 run in overtime to defeat Moberly 66-60. Mexico preserved a six point advantage entering the fourth quarter. Moberly’s Kennedy Messer was fouled and made three straight free-throws to cut Mexico’s lead down to four. After a series of turnovers by the Lady Bulldogs, Messer once again delivered.

Scott Lunte with the call on KWIX and centralmoinfo.com. Messer then hit a field goal to extend Moberly’s lead to four. Mexico senior Abby Oetting then hit a three, then scored a field goal to hold a one point lead. Moberly’s Asa Fanning was then fouled and went one for two at the line to force overtime. Lady Spartans coach Tony Vestal took a lot of positives out of a six point loss to the likely NCMC champs.

In overtime, Moberly took a 60-58 lead, then Mexico finished the game with a pair of put-backs, and extended the lead from the free-throw line. Lady Bulldogs coach Ed Costley believes they did a good job creating turnovers in the second half.

Grace Billington scored a game-high 32 points as the Lady Spartans drop to 8-12. Riley Thurman scored 24 for Mexico as they improve to 15-3, and 7-0 in the NCMC.

The Mexico boys outscored Moberly 26-8 in the third quarter to best the Spartans 73-56. Bulldogs coach Darren Pappas credits his defense for creating the offensive outburst.

The Spartans stayed toe-to-toe with the Bulldogs in the other three quarters. They trailed 17-14 in the first quarter, then took a 36-33 at the half. Mexico outscored Moberly 14-12 in the final frame. Moberly coach Cord Hagedorn said they need to figure out how to have stronger third quarters.

The ninth ranked Bulldogs improve to 17-3 and are 6-1 in the NCMC. Junior Daeye Miller led the Bulldogs with 22 points. Moberly falls to 7-12. Jaisten Payne scored a game-high 28 points. Hear full postgame interviews below:
