Marceline Hosts Much Improved Highland in District Championship

Marceline welcomes Highland in the district championship on KRES Friday. 9-1 Marceline returned from its bye to defeat another Clarence Cannon Conference opponent last week. Coach Mark Ross notes the Tigers were encouraged by their 42-14 district semifinal victory versus South Shelby.

Marceline’s next foe Highland topped South Shelby 24-8 in week five. Ross scouts the Cougars.

Ross referenced quarterback Drew Mallett and running back Robert Goehl. The duo has a combined 26 rushing touchdowns. Mallett enters with 21 touchdown passes and three interceptions.

Highland sits 8-3 in the midst of one of its best seasons in recent history. Cougars head coach Dave Degarmo credits his seniors for leading the program’s turnaround.

The Cougars have opened the postseason with two shutout victories after defeating Westran 38-0 last week. Degarmo describes why he feels his defense has been so impressive in the playoffs.

Degarmo says the rushing attack offensively for the Cougars has exploded over the last few weeks. On the other side, Degarmo says that while Marceline doesn’t run many plays, the Tigers run them so effectively that the Cougars defense must be on its toes at all times.

District championship coverage of Marceline and Highland begins after the Truman basketball broadcast on KRES and centralmoinfo.com. Eric Duick and Brandon Monty have the call.
