Macon Tigerettes Claim Home Tournament, Pair of NCMC Schools Also Victorious

The Macon girls captured its first home tournament title since 2013 while Moberly and Kirksville secured the third place and consolation trophies.

The Macon Tigerettes used a huge second half run to down Mexico in the championship game 59-43. Macon outscored Mexico 16-10 in the third quarter to build a 42-35 lead heading into the final quarter. They then opened the fourth quarter on a 12-0 run capped by this shot from Shelby Petre.

Colin Schowe with the call on KRES and centralmoinfo.com. Petre finished with a game-high 19 points. Macon coach Richard Driscoll was complimentary of the sophomore’s play.

With the win, Macon improves to 13-4. Mexico led for most of the first half; however, Macon’s speedy transition game wore them down as the game went along. Mexico coach Ed Costley said Macon’s speed was a big problem for them.

Mexico was led by Logan Blevins with 13 points. Mexico’s leading scorer Mya Miller was held to just one point.

In the third place game, Moberly returned to their winning ways with a 47-35 victory over Brookfield. Moberly was led by Makayla Payne who hit five three-pointers to finish with 15 points. Moberly coach Tony Vestal said Payne’s offensive contributions were huge.

Mary Billington finished the game with 11 second half points. Moberly grabbed a 14-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Brookfield was able to cut the deficit to three in the second quarter but could get no closer. Brookfield coach Tony Fairchild said he liked the effort his girls gave.

Moberly improves to 8-7 on the season while Brookfield falls to 9-7.

Kirksville collected the consolation championship with a 54-45 victory over Centralia. The 54 points is a season high scoring output for Nick Totta’s 8-7 Tigers.

Sophomore Corrine Vorkink led the way with a game-high 15 points. 7-8 Centralia was led by freshman Jozelynn Bostick who tallied a team high nine points. Hear full postgame interviews below:
