Macon Boys Complete Unbeaten Conference Run, Monroe City Girls Rally in the Final Quarter

The Macon boys completed an unbeaten run to the Clarence Cannon Conference title while the Monroe City girls spoiled the Tigerette’s senior night with a fourth quarter rally Friday night at Macon High School.

In the nightcap, Macon completed a perfect 7-0 run through the Clarence Cannon Conference with a 71-45 victory over Monroe City. The Tigers outscored the Panthers in every quarter. Boston Douglas celebrated senior night with a 27-point performance. Fellow senior Maurice Magruder and MyKel Linear added 17 and 13 respectively. Coach Dale Devenport said it was good to see the seniors perform on a special night.

Monroe City started hot and held a 12-9 lead in the first quarter. However, the Tigers responded with a couple easy baskets off turnovers to grab control. Devenport said he liked the way his team settled into the game.

Macon improves to 21-4 on the season. Monroe City drops to 7-19 heading into district play Monday. Senior Reece Buhlig led the Panthers with 18 points. Coach Brock Edris said this game was a valuable experience for his younger players.

In the girls’ game, Monroe City outscored Macon 15-6 in the final quarter for a 43-37. The Tigerettes led by as many as seven points in the third quarter and held a five-point advantage early in the fourth. Marideth Gares changed that in one quick burst.

Colin Schowe with the call on Superstation KRES and centralmoinfo.com. Gares led the Lady Panthers with a game-high 14 points while Lucy Pratt chipped in with 13. Free throws were key for the Lady Panthers as they shot 16-19 for the game. Coach Adam Rung said some halftime adjustments also paid dividends.

Emily Dawson, Brooke Weimer, and Reece Barnett paced the Tigerettes with nine points apiece. They were outscored 15-6 by the Lady Panthers in the final quarter. Coach Natalie Garlock said they didn’t respond well to adversity in the final period.

Macon drops to 9-16 while Monroe City improves to 10-16.
