Luetkemeyer Says Congressional Raises Unlikely

A Congressman who announced he is retiring at the end of the year has called for raises for members of Congress starting in the next session. Patrick McHenry, a Republican from North Carolina, says $174,000 per year is not enough to attract some of the best people to the job. Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer, who announced his own retirement last week, agrees with the sentiment.

However, with many members calling for less spending, he doesn’t think a proposal would pass.

Any proposal to raise salaries could not take effect until after the next election. Congressional salaries have not changed since 2009.
