Lady Spartans Reach State Quarterfinals For First Time

The Moberly Lady Spartans will play in the state quarterfinals for the first time in program history following a 55-48 victory over the Visitation Academy Vivettes Tuesday. After four lead changes in the first quarter, the Vivettes grabbed their first advantage of the second with 10 seconds until break. The lead was short-lived.

Moberly led from the midway point of the third quarter through the end of the game. Coach Tony Vestal was happy to see Billington rebound from a district title game when she shot just 3-for-16 from the field without a three.

Visitation Academy trimmed the deficit to one twice in the fourth but the Lady Spartans iced the game with free throws, including a six-for-six performance in the final frame by senior Kennedy Messer. She finished with 16 points. Vestal liked what he saw from Savanna Orscheln off the bench.

Vestal reacted to reaching the program’s first-ever quarterfinal.

The Lady Spartans will oppose top-ranked Vashon.

Tipoff is at 4 Saturday and will be played at Lindenwood in St. Charles.
