La Plata Shutout by Maysville in State Championship Game

La Plata softball was shutout by Maysville 4-0 in the Class 1 state title game Saturday. Both teams were scoreless before the tide started to turn in the bottom of the fifth. La Plata loaded the bases with two outs for pitcher and leading hitter Olivia Coy but she grounded out to short to end the inning. Maysville immediately cashed in on the momentum swing.

Austin Ward with the call on 99.9 The Captain and centralmoinfo.com. Hailey Lemunyon then hit a triple but Coy struck out the next three to end the frame. Maysville added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Lemunyon went 3-for-4 with two triples and tossed the complete game shutout in the circle. She struck out six, walked two and gave up just four hits. Coy gave up the four runs, eight hits, one walk and struck out 10. Coach Greg Buescher shared his postgame message to the team.

Coy along with Pieper Wood and Brooklyn Carvajal graduate from the program.

Buescher is still encouraged by the future.

Maysville wins its second state title in four years. La Plata’s second place finish is the highest since also taking second in 2001.
