La Plata High School has hired new head coaches for boys basketball, baseball, and softball. A familiar face will be running the baseball and boys basketball teams in the form of La Plata High School graduate Matt Safley. On the basketball side, he will take over a young Bulldog squad that went 2-22 this past year. He takes over for longtime area head coach Greg Buescher, who led the Bulldogs to a district title in 2020. Safley inherits a baseball team that compiled a 15-4 record under longtime head coach Josh Woodward. In ten seasons as Bulldog head coach Woodward saw the team win five district titles, finish third in Class 1 in 2017, and second in 2019.
La Plata’s new softball coach is Sarah Espy. She will take over for Buescher who led La Plata to back-to-back Final Four appearances the past two seasons. The Bulldogs finished tied for third in 2020 and second this past fall. Buescher went 119-43 during his time as La Plata softball coach.
