Host La Plata Beats Brashear in 4-5 Matchup; Sixth-Seeded Marion County Holds Off Atlanta

The Canton, La Plata, North Shelby, and Marion County girls advanced to the Class 1, District 11 semifinals with victories at La Plata Monday.

Host La Plata outlasted Brashear 51-42 in the second game. The 9-16 Lady Bulldogs gained control late in the first half.

Eric Duick with the call of senior Sheridyn Bealmer’s three on KRES and centralmoinfo.com. 12-12 Brashear opened with a 16-8 advantage before La Plata heated up late in the second quarter. Sophomore Brooklyn Carvajal paced the Lady Bulldogs with 12. Lady Tiger senior Alexa Higgins closed her career with a game-high 18. Fourth-seeded La Plata meets top-seeded Canton in the district semifinals.

Canton topped Bevier 54-20 in the first quarterfinal contest. Lady Tiger senior Lauren Frazier recorded her 1,000th career point en route to Canton’s 35-4 lead at the half. Canton head coach Danielle Baker reacted to Frazier’s 26-point night.

Canton sits 15-10 ahead of the semifinals. Bevier ends the year 3-21. Sophomore Jadyn Cole guided the Lady Wildcats with 10.

North Shelby defeated Novinger 71-30. Lady Raider freshman Ceairra Kirby provided 16 points while fellow freshman Natalie Thrasher added 14 off the bench for 15-11 North Shelby.

Novinger finishes the season 3-19. Lady Cat freshman Abbi Fountain delivered a game-high 17.

The final game of the night provided the lone upset, when the sixth-seed Marion County held off third-seeded Atlanta 47-41. After giving up the first basket, the Lady Mustangs went on an 8-0 run and never trailed again.

Coach Reed Plunkett said his team good a job of playing hard.

Delaney Straus led the Lady Mustangs with 14. Marion County is now 8-15, and will play North Shelby Wednesday. Atlanta was led by Bryann Magers with 21. The Lady Hornets’ season ends 13-8.
