Mid-July is often the hottest time of the year in Missouri. Meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, Jimmy Barham says this will be a prolonged heatwave.

The cause of the upcoming heatwave isn’t an unusual phenomenon for this time of year.

These types of weather patterns also tend to block any type of low pressure systems from moving into the area, resulting in lengthy periods of hot weather. Staying hydrated and finding ways to keep cool will be important for area residents this weekend. Barham adds checking up on family, friends, and neighbors is also important.

There is a possibililty of some pop-up thunderstorms providing some relief from the heat. However, the rain chance for the weekend is expected to be very slight, and the storms will likely be very scattered.
