Harrisburg and South Iron Faceoff in State Title Rematch at Mizzou Arena

In 2008 Harrisburg and South Iron met at Mizzou Arena for the Class 2 boys championship. The Bulldogs scored the final seven points in that game to win 51-44. Over 15 years later the two schools will meet in a rematch at the Norm Stewart Classic. The Bulldogs bring a 3-2 record into the contest. They fell 72-64 to New Franklin on Saturday in the Glasgow Tournament Championship game. Coach Kyle Fisher says a tough early schedule will be beneficial for his team.

The Bulldogs face a Panther squad that has won the last three Class 1 championships. Fisher says its important for his team to balance enjoyment with business in this game.

South Iron is 5-0 on the young season. They return starters Will Malone and Sawyer Huff from last year’s team. They’ve also received a boost from West County transfer Ty Harlow. Coach Dusty Dinkins says there’s room for growth with this year’s team.

The Panthers last played in the Norm Stewart Classic two years ago, dropping a 73-69 overtime decision to Kankakee, Illinois. Dinkins says his team’s familarity with big atmospheres will be beneficial.

Dinkins was the head coach of the Panthers in the 2008 state title game while Fisher’s assistant coach Steve Combs, was the head coach for the Bulldogs’ 2006 and 2008 championship teams. You can hear coverage of Thursday’s matchup on Superstation KRES and centralmoinfo.com at around 2:50. Colin Schowe will have the play-by-play.
