Hallsville Sweeps Aside Moberly with Pair of 20 Point Victories
For Hallsville basketball 20 was plenty against Moberly. Both the Hallsville girls and boys basketball teams started fast to cruise to 20 point victories at home. The Lady Indians opened the night by outscoring the Lady Spartans 20-10 in the first quarter on their way to a 56-36 win. Avery Oetting led the first quarter charge for Hallsville.
Colin Schowe with the call on Superstation KRES and centralmoinfo.com. Oetting would scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter to stake the Lady Indians to a lead they would never relinquish. Hallsville coach Matt Heet said Oetting’s fast start was huge.
Taylor Jones joined Oetting in double figures with twelve points. The Moberly Lady Spartans played the game without leading scorer Mary Billington, who was suspended after being ejected in the previous game against Warrenton. Aleesia (Uh-Lee-See-uh) Oliver led a balanced attack with nine points. Moberly coach Tony Vestal said this game was a learning experience for the girls.
Hallsville ran their winning streak to five games and improves to 9-3. Meanwhile, Moberly dropped their third straight to fall to 3-6. In the boys game Hallsville scored the first 14 points and never looked back on their way to a 60-40 victory over Moberly. Junior guard Jalen George capped the opening run for Hallsville.
George would lead a balanced Hallsville attack with 14 points on the night. Cooper Crane added twelve points and A.J. Austene added ten points. The Indians played a large portion of the game without leading scorer Clayton Cook after he collided with Moberly’s Dominic Stoneking late in the first quarter. Cook hit the back of his head on the floor following the collision and was placed into concussion protocol for the rest of the game. The win improved Hallsville to 8-4 on the season and ran their winning streak to four games. The Indians defense has now allowed 40 or less points in each game during the streak. Hallsville coach Brannon Bartlett said the team’s defensive formula is pretty simple.
Moberly tried to rally from the early hole but could only get as close as eight points early in the second quarter. Jaisten Payne led Moberly with 14 points in the game. Moberly coach Cord Hagedorn said his biggest concern coming out of this loss was the defense.
The loss dropped Moberly to 1-7 on the season.
