Growing Tropical Plant In Cold Missouri Winter Key To Proficiency Award Win

Perhaps the biggest challenge for George Frees of the Cass Career Center FFA Chapter was figuring how to grow the sugarcane needed for his project into improving its ethanol output.  Frees explains how he was able to grow the sugarcane that led to him winning this year’s national proficiency award in Agriscience Research, Plant Systems.

Central to Frees’ research was the use of gibberellic acid.  Frees says while he focused on sugarcane, he believes some of his research could be applied to corn.

Frees picked up his proficiency award at last month’s National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.
