Green City to Battle Canton in Class 1 Baseball Sectional

The Green City Gophers will visit the Canton Tigers in a Class 1 baseball sectional Monday night. Both schools are coming off a week that involved significant travel in order to win their respective districts. Green City had originally been scheduled to host their district. However, wet field conditions resulted in them traveling to California for their semifinal and championship contests. Green City coach Dale Whitacre says their district semifinal win over Novinger was a confidence builder for them.

The Gophers rolled 16-1 in the district title game against Princeton. That win gave Green City their third straight district title. The Gophers also feature several players that are fresh off winning the Class 1 State Track Championship over the weekend. Whitacre says the players have done a great job juggling their responsibilities at the end of the school year.

Despite making deep playoff runs and three trips to the Class 2 Final Four since 2013, the Canton Tigers had to win their district title as an underdog. The Tigers were seeded fourth in their district but knocked off top-seeded La Plata on the road. They then traveled to South Callaway for the district championship, where they defeated Knox County 14-8. Canton coach Andy Anderson says his team has a lot of momentum from those two wins.

Canton comes into the Sectional matchup against Green City on a six-game winning streak. Anderson says they’ll need to do several things in order to keep the winning streak and their season going.

Canton is 13-6 heading into the Sectional contest while Green City comes in with a record of 10-3. Colin Schowe will have the call on KRES 104.7 with pregame coverage beginning at 5:45 pm.
