Green City Girls and Meadville Boys Advance to Class 1 Quarterfinals

The Green City girls and Meadville boys both punched their tickets to the Class 1 Quarterfinals with Sectional victories Tuesday night at Salisbury High School.

The Green City Lady Gophers grabbed control early in the second quarter and held off a late Canton rally in a 54-50 win. Green City senior Brooke Littrell led all scorers with 37 points on the night. This included a key basket late in the second quarter.

The Littrell three-pointer gave Green City an eight point lead. The Lady Gophers led by as many as eleven during the game. While Littrell’s offensive effort was huge, Green City coach Cody Moore said the team’s defensive effort was equally important on the night.

Green City improves to 27-1 on the season and advances to face Community in a Class 1 Quarterfinal Friday at MACC. While Lauren Frazier was held to just eight points in the rematch with Green City, Tegan Burbridge picked up the scoring for the Lady Tigers with 29 points. Canton coach Danielle Baker said it was a game with a thin margin of error.

Canton graduates Frazier along with Brilyn Pearl from a team that went 17-12 this season.

The Meadville Eagles used a hot start to propel them to a 54-39 victory over the La Plata Bulldogs. The Eagles led 30-13 at halftime and knocked down six first-half threes. Conner Fletcher led the way.

Fletcher finished with 14 points. La Plata’s Gage McHenry scored a team-high 17. La Plata coach Greg Buescher talked about where his team was lacking defensively in the first half.

La Plata outscored the Eagles 16-10 in the third quarter before Meadville’s Dominik Gannan scored eight of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to help close things out. Coach Drew Nier said the gameplan was executed well.

Meadville moves to 26-2 while La Plata finishes the season 18-10. Meadville will play St. Elizabeth in Friday’s quarterfinal.
