Green City Captures First Ever La Plata Tournament Title; Canton Impresses in 3rd Place Game

The Green City Gophers and Canton Tigers secured first and third place respectively on the boys’ side of the La Plata Tournament Friday night.

In the nightcap, the Gophers pounced on the Schuyler County Rams in a 75-58 win. Green City took a 43-22 lead into the locker room at halftime. Schuyler County got to within 13 in the fourth quarter. Junior Xander Salas capped off a big night for the Gophers with a highlight play.

Steven Findley Jr with the call on Superstation KRES and centralmoinfo.com. Asher Buggs-Tipton poured in 25 points to lead the way for Green City. Salas finished with 18 points. Coach Matt Ayers said the win was a team effort.

Kale Windy paced the 18-3 Rams with 15 points. The Rams trailed by as much as 24 in the third quarter. Coach Chris Prewitt said the loss serves as a lesson for the Rams.

Green City improves to 17-2.

Canton’s 12-0 start in the third-place game carried the Tigers to an 80-67 win over Putnam County. Junior Chris Alspaw entered the game off the bench and dazzled the gymnasium.

Alspaw’s 19 was replicated by fellow junior Preston Brewer. Coach Dalton Armontrout talked about Alspaw’s big night.

The Tigers move to 15-6. The now 15-4 Midgets got a team-high 21 points from senior Trace Riediger. Coach Kyle Fleshman said his team competed till the end.

Earlier in the night Atlanta defeated Scotland County 57-53 for fifth place.
