Former Senator Critical Of Grassley-Led Cattle Market Reforms Measure

Former Senator Pat Roberts is warning that efforts to address price disparities that have impacted cattle producers the past two years may cause friction when it comes time to write the next Farm Bill.  Speaking at last month’s National Association of Farm Broadcasting convention in Kansas City, the retired Republican lawmaker from Kansas said the issue has faced producers for decades.

Roberts expressed doubt about proposals brought by Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley to require at least half of cattle sales to be negotiated on the open market.

Roberts served in Congress for four decades, including as chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee from 2015 to 2021 and House Ag Committee from 1995 to 1997.
