Ellison to Make Basketball Coaching Return at Sturgeon

After two years away from coaching basketball, Kyle Ellison is set to return to the sidelines as the new head coach of the Sturgeon boys basketball team. Ellison’s last tenure as a head coach in basketball was as the boys’ coach at Scotland County during the 2018-19 season. He had spent the last two years as an assistant football coach at Father Tolton before being hired at Sturgeon. Ellison explains why he’s back to coaching basketball.

Ellison will take over for Michael Smith who will now coach baseball and serve as Sturgeon’s Athletic Director. Ellison says he’s looking forward to working with Smith at Sturgeon.

Prior to coaching at Scotland County, Ellison spent four years leading the girls’ basketball program at his alma mater, Highland. The Lady Cougars went 50-51 during Ellison’s tenure. Ellison discusses the style of play he’s looking for from his players at Sturgeon.

Ellison takes over a Sturgeon squad that graduates three seniors and went 10-11 during the 2020-21 season.
