Drought Resurgence Pressures Still-Recovering Pastures

The resurgence of drought conditions across a mid-section of Missouri has farmers and ranchers concerned about the quality of their pastures.  University of Missouri Extension livestock forage specialist Gene Schmitz says the lack of rain has caused some forages to stay dormant.

Schmitz says producers who are maintaining their pastures’ soil health are weathering the drought better than others.  He says several options are on the table for producers as they determine their next course of action.

MU Extension livestock forage specialist Gene Schmitz notes that producers may need to turn to feeding their cattle grain or putting together a cull list to reduce their inventories.
