The South Shelby Ladybirds open a Friday night of basketball against the Hallsville Lady Indians. Both teams were district champions last year, with the Ladybirds finishing as state runner-ups and the Lady Indians advancing to the state quarterfinal. South Shelby coach Luke O’Laughlin says his team is focused on the present season.
The Ladybirds return five seniors from last years team and are led by Miranda Patterson who is averaging 13.5 points per game this season on nearly 48 percent shooting from the field.
For the Lady Indians, a 22-8 record last year was their first 20-plus win season since 2012. Coach Matt Heet says he looks forward to an early season test against South Shelby.
Game two of the doubleheader between the boys will have both teams entering with one win this season. Hallsville is 1-0 after taking down Sturgeon 81-36. Coach Brandon Crites says the Indians have some familiarity with South Shelby.
The Cardinals of South Shelby have played a pair of games so far this season, with an opening loss to undefeated Westran followed up by a big win over Paris. For coach Kent O’Laughlin, improvement from the summer is something he hopes his team continues to show.
