Coronavirus Leaves Red Cross Well Behind on Blood Donations
March 20, 2020 6:41AM CDT
Red Cross External Communications Manager Joe Zydlo details the coronavirus’ impact on blood drives.
Zydlo’s numbers were as of late Tuesday, and the ratios in the Missouri, Arkansas, and Illinois region were similar. The external communications manager responds to those who have questioned the push to donate despite recommended crowd limits.
Zydlo indicates the Red Cross increased safety measures last week.
Zydlo notes about 20 percent of nationwide blood drives are held at schools, and well more than 20 percent of the recent cancellations are from schools. Some drives have been rescheduled or relocated. Tuesday’s Randolph County blood drive moved from Westran High School to Huntsville First Baptist Church’s Trask Hall from 1-6pm.
