Construction To Begin Next Year On New FSIS Lab

The design is still in the works, but that didn’t stop USDA officials from breaking ground Wednesday on the site of a new inspection lab in St Louis.  The Midwest Laboratory, operated by the Food Safety Inspection Service, will relocate from its current location in the Goodfellow Federal Center to a new lab located near the University of Missouri-St Louis campus in Normandy.  The St Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the lab will be on the site of a former convent that closed in 2018, moving 60 employees out of a federal building slated for closure amid reports of lead and asbestos health hazards.  The FSIS lab is one of three in the country and is expected to open its new facility in mid-2025.
