Community’s Season Ends to Reigning Class 1 Champs

The Community Lady Trojans season came to a close with a 52-47 loss to Walnut Grove in the Class 1 semifinals Thursday night at JQH Arena in Springfield.

In a relatively even game, the Lady Trojans trailed 5-0 out of the gate, but answered back with a 9-0 run. Late in the third and early in the fourth, Community got the offense rolling thanks to a pair of unexpected sources.

Scott Lunte with the call on Glory 97 and The three gave Community a one point lead and they eventually extended it to four after senior Delaney Bowers hit another triple. Afterwards, Walnut Grove went on a 10-2 run to retake the lead. The Lady Trojans fouled with a minute left and couldn’t corral a missed one-and-one to get another chance at the lead. Due to the threat of coronavirus, MSHSAA limited Thursday’s crowd to 150 people per team, and canceled all of the scheduled third place games. The Lady Trojans were awarded a third place plaque along with South Iron after their semifinal losses. Curtis graduates six seniors who helped Community to its first two Show-Me-Showdowns in program history.

Bowers finished with a team high 15 points. Community finishes the year 28-2. Walnut Grove’s Faith Gilkey scored a game-high 19 points. The 27-5 Lady Tigers face Platte Valley in the Class 1 title game Friday. You can hear Curtis’ full postgame interview below:
