Columbia Police Release Information on Homicide

The Columbia Police Department has released more details in the shooting death of a woman, and eventual death of the suspect this week. Around 3:40 Sunday afternoon, police responded to a robbery in progress at a home in the 53-hundred block of East Tayside Circle. There they found 72-year-old Janet L. Jago of Columbia had sustained a gunshot wound. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Detectives determined 32-year-old Jermaine M. Burnett of Columbia was a person of interest. Police found him Tuesday, but he refused to cooperate and barricaded himself with two hostages inside an apartment building in the three-thousand block of South Providence. The hostages were able to leave, and the rest of that building was evacuated. When officers were finally able to enter the building, they found Bennett dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Another suspect in the woman’s death, a juvenile, faces charges of second degree murder, first degree robbery and armed criminal action.
