Cairo Boys, Community Girls Begin Show-Me Showdown Pursuits in Class 1 Sectionals
The Cairo Bearcats and Community Lady Trojans are set to play in Class 1 sectional games Tuesday at Harrisburg High School.
Fifth-ranked Cairo meets fourth-ranked St. Elizabeth in the second game. Bearcats head coach Nic Zenker scouts the 22-5 Hornets, who are undefeated in Class 1 games.
St. Elizabeth finished third in Class 1 last year and returned all five starters, four of whom are at least 6’2″. Cairo enters 24-4 after it beat Sturgeon Saturday. Zenker explains what must go right against St. Elizabeth.
St. Elizabeth topped Jamestown Saturday.
The top-ranked Community Lady Trojans are coming off a 44-24 district title over the Cairo Lady Cats. Community head coach Bob Curtis had all five starters named to CAC All-Conference teams Monday morning.
Community senior Natalie Thomas was named the conference’s MVP. The Lady Trojans are 26-1. Community faces a 15-9 Chamois Lady Pirate team who defeated top-seeded Otterville 45-27. Chamois head coach John Leach says man-to-man defense is what has them in their first sectional since 2013.
Chamois’ leading scorer is junior Katie Keilholz, who averages 18 points per game. Community last faced Chamois in a 2018 Class 1 District semifinal and won 54-46. Coverage of Class 1 sectionals from Harrisburg begins at 5:45pm on Glory 97.3 and centralmoinfo.com. Eric and Scott have the call.
