The Boone County Fairgrounds are being transferred from the county to the city of Columbia. Officials from both announced Thursday they have reached an agreement, and both sides must now formally vote on the transfer. The 135.9 acres will go to the city without any exchange of cash. The city will convert the property into a recreation complex for all county residents. The new park could include six synthetic multi-sport turf fields, an eight-lane track and field area, four baseball/softball diamonds, two picnic shelters, an inclusive playground, and a 29-acre agricultural park that could become the permanent home of the annual Boone County Fair. The city will also take over maintenance of Boone County’s portion of the MKT Trail.
