Big Runs Lead North Shelby to Matching Scorelines in Sweep of Scotland County

Both the North Shelby girls and boys basketball teams used big runs to roll in their respective wins against Scotland County Tuesday night.

The Lady Raiders opened the game on a 7-0 run, started the second quarter on an 8-0 burst and broke the game open with a 14-0 run to defeat Scotland County 61-37. Senior Caroline Linberger provided the highlight of the game in the third quarter.

Fellow seniors Ava Williams and Natalie Thrasher also hit double figures with 16 and 13 points respectively. North Shelby girls coach Chris Parsons said it was a great final home game for Linberger and the senior class.

The Lady Raiders improved to 22-3 with the victory. Scotland County was led by Paige Bishop with 13 points. Despite the early scoring runs by North Shelby, the Lady Tigers hung tough through the first half as they trailed 25-15 at the break. Scotland County girls coach Cory Shultz said it was a learning experience for his team.

The Lady Tigers drop to 10-14 with the loss.

In the boys’ game, North Shelby went on a 15-0 run from the end of the first quarter through the midway point of the second quarter to roll to its 61-37 win over Scotland County. Senior Brendyn McDaniel helped spark the run in the first quarter.

McDaniel led four Raiders in double figures with 20 points. JD Rich added 16 points while Jade Daniel and Gabe Orr finished with ten apiece. North Shelby boys coach Cody Stoneburner said Orr’s offensive outburst was an extra bonus.

The Raiders evened their record to 12-12. Corbin Blessing led the Tigers with 16 points. The Raiders’ stingy defense held the Tigers to just 14 points in the first half. Scotland County boys coach Jeremy Austin explained the issues in combating their defense.

Scotland County drops to 5-18 with the defeat.
