Baleage An Option For Damp Pasture Fields

This week’s heat may have helped to dry fields out, but several hay producers may still have to contend with hay and pastures with high moisture content.  University of Missouri Extension forage specialist Rob Kallenbach says baled hay can have as much as 60 percent moisture content for it to undergo baleage.

Key to baleage is the use of plastic wrap that blocks sunlight.

University of Missouri Extension forage specialist Doctor Rob Kallenbach says the plastic wrap around baled hay should be inspected regularly and any holes discovered in the wrap promptly patched.  He notes that specialized baleage equipment will be needed, but custom applicators may have the gear on hand to complete the task.
