Ayers Returns to Coaching at Green City

Former Green City Gopher Matt Ayers is set to return to his alma mater as their new boys’ basketball coach. Ayers was a three-time KRES All-Star and an All-State selection for the Gophers. He graduated from Green City in 2007 and later spent three years as an assistant coach at Pittsburg State University. Ayers says he’s excited to take over a program that has reached the Class 1 Quarterfinals the last two years.

Ayers takes over for Donnie Fields who resigned after coaching the Gophers for the past eleven years. In the last five seasons under Fields, the team won 100 games and three district titles. Ayers says he looks forward to staying in communication with Fields.

Ayers inherits a Green City team that went 23-7 and lost to eventual state runner-up Stanberry in the quarterfinals. The Gophers graduate only one senior, Laydon Fields, from this past year’s team. Ayers says the playing style won’t change much under his watch.

Green City will also have a new girls basketball coach for the 2022-23 season as Cody Moore is leaving to serve as the Brashear Principal.
