Atlanta Hosts Green City in Tri-County North Doubleheader

Atlanta hosts Green City Tuesday night in a key early season Tri-County North doubleheader. Both girls teams faced each other earlier this season with Green City defeating the Lady Hornets 58-26 in the opening round of the Novinger Tournament. The Lady Gophers went on to win the tournament and enter the rematch with the Lady Hornets at 4-1. Coach Nick Edwards expects a tougher contest this time around.

Sophomore Jaryn Hatcher led the Lady Gophers with 21 points in the first meeting. While this game will be the conference opener for Green City, the Lady Hornets enter the game with a 1-2 mark in the Tri-County North and are 3-3 overall. The Lady Hornets are coming off a 58-36 win over Linn County on Friday. Coach Jason White says they need to clean-up the mistakes from their first game with Green City.

The boys matchup brings together a pair of Class 1 quarterfinalists from last season. The Gophers are off to a hot start this season at 5-0. Asher Buggs-Tipton leads the team with 22 points-per-game. Coach Matt Ayers says his team needs to be locked in for this contest.

The Hornets beat the Gophers in two-out-of-three games last season. That included a buzzer-beater by JJ White to complete a come-from-behind 63-62 win over the Gophers in the La Plata Tournament Championship. White leads the team in scoring and three-point shooting. Coach White says three-point shooting could be a key in this year’s matchup.

Atlanta enters the contest with a 5-2 overall record and are 3-0 in the Tri-County North. Coverage of Tuesday night’s contest can be found on Superstation KRES and beginning at around 5:45. Colin Schowe will have the play-by-play.
