Adrian Line, Run Game Overwhelms Monroe City

The Adrian Blackhawks handed the Monroe City Panthers their lone loss of the season with a 32-16 victory in the Class 1 semifinals today. Monroe went three-and-out on its opening drive but grabbed the first lead after turning an interception into points on a one-yard plunge by Ceaton Pennewell that was set up by a 49-yard Quincy Mayfield run. Adrian responded with a 65-yard touchdown run by Hunter Bailey and took the lead on a 24-yard rush by quarterback Colton Miller. Miller struck again with his legs less than two minutes later.

Brandon Monty with the call on Glory 97.3 and centralmoinfo.com. The Panthers got a nine-yard touchdown run by Landon Utterback late in the first half to go to the break trailing 22-16. Adrian effectively put the game away with Miller’s third rushing touchdown of the day with 7:47 left. Monroe City coach David Kirby said the Blackhawks were the better team.

Mayfield was the Panthers’ leading rusher with 78 yards on 11 carries and had a touchdown saving tackle at the one yard line late in the game.

Monroe City closes the year 13-1. Adrian opposes defending state champion East Buchanan in the Class 1 Championship game.
