Westran Upsets Fayette, Harrisburg Rolls to Opening Round Victory

Fifth-seeded Westran upended fourth-seeded Fayette while Harrisburg rolled to an opening round win over Slater Tuesday night in the Class 2 District 7 Girls Tournament at New Franklin High School.

Westran snapped a nine-game losing streak by leading wire-to-wire in a 45-32 win over Fayette. The Lady Hornets built a ten-point lead at halftime. They then expanded it in the third quarter thanks in part to Dylan Perry.

The Lady Hornets led by as many 16 in the third quarter, but the Lady Falcons trimmed the lead down to five in the fourth quarter. Westran coach Alex Thomas said free throws were key down the stretch.

The Lady Hornets finished the game 14-21 at the charity stripe. That included Perry scoring her final three points of the game on six consecutive free throws after an intentional foul on Skylar Sunderland and two technical fouls on Lady Falcon head coach Daryl Betts. Jaelyn Miller joined Perry in double figures with twelve points. Thomas said this is a big win for the program.

Westran improves to 6-20 and will face top-seeded Salisbury in Thursday’s semifinal round. Fayette was led by Hannah Quint and Kay Sullivan with six points apiece. The Lady Falcons conclude the season at 13-13.

In the night’s opener, Harrisburg started on a 7-0 run to help lift them to a 60-25 win over Slater. Emma Fischer led four different Lady Bulldogs in double figures with 13 points. Harrisburg coach Ryan Richardson said it was a solid opener.

Harrisburg improves to 16-11 and will second-seeded New Franklin in the semifinals. Slater was held to single digits in each quarter by the Lady Bulldogs. Madison Prysock (Pri-sock) led the Lady Wildcats with ten points. Despite the end result, Slater coach Rachel Harding said she liked the way her team battled.

Slater concludes the season at 5-21.
