70th Anniversary of KWIX Radio
The 70th anniversary of KWIX radio was Wednesday. The station actually had the call letters KNCM when signing on the air June 17th, 1950. During a birthday salute Thursday, the wife of one of our original salesmen, Dee Fowler, called the show from West Des Moines. She explained how Guy Fowler got started with station founder Jerrell Shepherd….
Dee remembered her husband’s first sale for the station….
Dee said a family event actually made a KNCM newscast….
Dee Fowler said they left Moberly after a few years when Guy got hired by a station in Peoria, Illinois.
The original KNCM radio station was located on South Morley street. Jerrell Shepherd made the decision to change the call letters to K-W-I-X when he determined KNCM was too difficult to say. In going with K-W-I-X, Shepherd went a step further in starting a tradition of call letters that you could also say as a word….KWIX.
