A player on the first Moberly High School boys soccer team is ready to return the program to postseason prominence. Ben Hays was promoted to Spartans head coach by the Moberly Board of Education this week, after serving the last two years as an assistant to Chris Buckman. Hays was in the Moberly class that was the first to play four years of high school boys soccer from 1995-98. In only the second year of the program, the Spartans made a trip to the state semifinals and finished 4th. Hays is excited for the challenge to lead the soccer Spartans….

Since a state quarterfinal appearance in 2014, the Spartans have gone a combined 24-64-1 the last four years. Hays says the blueprint for building the program is the same as when he was a player…..

Last year, the Spartans finished 7-14, but won 4-of-5 to wrap up the season. Hays says they will need to have a good offseason….

Ben Hays is in his third year teaching math at Moberly High School. Prior to that, he taught three years at Jefferson City and nine years at Sweet Springs. He is also an assistant boys basketball coach at Moberly High School. This will be his first varsity head coaching job.

Buckman became the soccer coach at Moberly High School in 2013-14 and finished with a boys overall record of 59-79-1. He led the Spartans to a district championship and state quarterfinal appearance in 2014. He remains the girls soccer coach.
