MAYLEE LEADS WELLSVILLE TO OVERTIME WIN OVER SOUTH SHELBY

South Shelby’s girls dominated Wellsville 60-30 in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader of the MRMC Holiday Shootout at MACC. Wellsville’s boys responded with a 50-45 overtime win against South Shelby in the day’s second game.Wellsville’s boys started strong with balanced offense, but South Shelby’s upperclassmen duo of Sidney Wear and Dawson Wood carried the Cardinals to a 22-19 halftime lead. Wear and Wood combined to score 34 of the Cardinals 45 points. The score remained within six points throughout the second half and overtime. The Cardinals played ahead much of the way, but the Tigers continued to claw away with points in the paint on second and third opportunities. Wellsville missed four free throws while down one point inside three minutes of regulation, then the Tigers trailed by two with one minute to play when sophomore Adam Maylee tied the game 37-37 with a layup. South Shelby scored first in overtime, but Wellsville answered with a 6-0 run for a 45-39 lead. Here is the game-winning sequence a few possessions later…

South Shelby tied the game with its own 6-0 run before senior Darrell Trendley’s game-winning basket for Wellsville. Maylee’s free throws resulted in a 50-45 final score. Maylee hit several clutch shots en route 18 points. Wellsville climbs 6-3 with the victory and South Shelby drops to 3-7.

Casey Johnson played a solid game for the Lady Tigers with 11 points, but the Lady Birds otherwise overwhelmed Wellsville from start to finish in a 60-30 win. South Shelby held Wellsville to two points in the first quarter then started the second half with an 18-2 run. South Shelby’s leading-scorer Kenzie Kendrick scored just four points, but the Lady Birds received production throughout the roster. Seven Lady Birds scored five-plus points, including sophomore Caitlyn Poore and freshman Meredith O’Neal who both closed with 11 points. After a 4-19 season a year ago, Tuesday’s win already guarantees improvement as South Shelby advances to 5-5 in its first season under Luke O’Laughlin.
