Big 12 Preview - TAMU

This year might be "put up or shut up" time for head coach Mike Sherman and the Texas A&M Aggies. Last year's 6-7 mark meant the Aggies suffered back-to-back losing campaigns for the first time since 1972 and '73.
A&M went just 3-5 in conference play last year, but with returning starters at nearly every skill position on offense and nine defensive returners, Sherman likes his team's chances to return to the Big 12 elite.....

The offensive leader for the Aggies might be one of the best quarterbacks in the Big 12, senior Jerrod Johnson (preseason Big 12 offensive player of the year).
Last season, Johnson completed nearly 60% of his passes for just under 3,600 - a single season passing record at A&M - while throwing 30 touchdowns with only eight interceptions.
Still, a leaky offensive line limited Johnson at times, and Sherman says a younger batch of trench warriors hold the key to the Aggies' firepower....

This year, Sherman will move to a 3-4 defensive scheme, which should highlight senior linebacker Von Miller (Big 12 preseason co-defensive player of the year).
Miller was a second-team All-American last year, whose 17 sacks was the best in all of college football.
The entire Aggie linebacking unit is made up of returning starters this year, so Sherman says he will release the hounds.....

One spread offense A&M will try to stifle this year belongs to Missouri.
The Tigers visit Kyle Field and the 12th Man on October 16th this season, one week after the Aggies visit Cowboys Stadium for a non-conference matchup against Arkansas.
A&M may also have one of the toughest two-game conference stretches in the country to end its regular season.
The Aggies will host Big 12 North favorite Nebraska on November 20th, then turn around and play a Thursday game under the lights in Austin against rival Texas on November 25th.
