NIXON PROPOSES LAYOFFS AND DEPARTMENT CONSOLIDATIONS

Saying he must cut $500 million from next year's budget, Gov. Jay Nixon, D-Missouri, proposed an additional 1,000 state layoffs, selling 2,000 cars in the state fleet and several department consolidations. The Governor wants to consolidate the Highway Patrol and the Water Patrol. Department of Public Safety spokesman Mike O'Connell says Nixon's proposal would maintain the full force on our roads and waterways:

The Governor also proposes consolidating DESE and the Department of Higher Education ... and closing numerous offices in the Department of Social Services' Family Support Division. That division handles issues like food stamps, child support enforcement and temporary assistance for needy families.

Nixon also wants to sell what he calls "unnecessary buildings".
